Assessment Tools for Aquatic Ecology

Understand the impacts of our changing world on water quality and ecosystems with data loggers and sensors for monitoring streams, wetlands, rivers, and marine environments

Protecting Our Aquatic Ecosystems for a Sustainable Future

Land use, development, and climate change can alter aquatic habitats and water quality. HOBO data loggers and sensors help you track water temperature, water level, conductivity/salinity, dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, and underwater photosynthetically active radiation (PAR).

Use these measurements to understand changes in streams, rivers, lakes, wetlands, and coastal waters and inform research, restoration, and resource management. Whether you are studying stream metabolism or evaluating habitat conditions, you can select individual loggers or a multiparameter system to fit your measurements, deployment conditions, and data-access needs.

Protecting Our Aquatic Ecosystems for a Sustainable Future

Temperature

Track daily and seasonal water-temperature patterns and compare them with dissolved oxygen, habitat observations, and other measurements.

Water Level

Record changes in water depth and inundation. Calculating stream flow requires an appropriate weir, flume, or validated stage-discharge relationship.

Conductivity/Salinity

Track changes in conductivity and salinity in freshwater and coastal sites. Compare the data with rainfall, tides, and other field observations to investigate changes in water chemistry.

Dissolved Oxygen

Track oxygen availability during daily cycles and seasonal changes, and identify periods of low dissolved oxygen that may affect aquatic organisms.

pH

Track changes in pH to study acidification and other shifts in water chemistry. Compare measurements over time and alongside calibration records and field observations.

Light

Measure underwater PAR to assess light available for photosynthesis at seagrass and other aquatic-plant monitoring sites. Review depth, shading, and sensor placement when comparing records.
